Warrior Golf Signs Two Local Products

HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i men's golf coach Ronn Miyashiro announced the signing of Henry Park of Kealakehe High School and Alexander Chu of Maryknoll High School. Both signed their National Letters of Intent and will join the Warriors for the 2009-10 season.

Park, a two-time Big Island Interscholastic Federation first team selection, sat out the 2008 season after transferring from Waiakea High School. In 2007, Park tied for fifth at the state championship in Waikoloa following a fourth place finish the year before.

Park has had quite a year in 2008. Earlier this month, he won the championship flight of the Makalei Amateur Championship with a two-round score of 147. He tied for third at both the Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association's Inaugural Mixed Team Championship and the U.S. Army Hawai'i Amateur Invitational Golf Championship.

In addition to the Makalei Amateur, Park also won individual titles at the 2002 Westfield Junior PGA Championship in the boys 11-12 division, a tie for first at the 2003 Callaway Hawai'i State Junior Championship in the boys 13-14 group, and the 2005 O'ahu Junior Golf Association Pearl Junior Open. In addition, Park has runner-up finishes at the 2003 JTS Big Island, 2005 Westfield Junior PGA Sectional Championship, and 2005 Callaway Golf PGA Junior Series #7.

Chu was a three-time all-Interscholastic League of Honolulu pick. Last season, he tied for 18th at the state championships after a tie for fifth as a junior.

As a junior golfer, Chu captured the Francis Hyde I'i Brown Four-Ball Match Play Championship for the second time after winning the tournament in 2005. In 2007, Chu won the OJGA Pearl Junior Open, the same year he placed second at the Mamala Bay Hickam AFB Invitational and tied for fifth at the U.S. Army Hawai'i Amateur Invitational.

In 2006, Chu captured tournament titles at the U.S. Army Junior Invitational in the 15-17 division and the Westfield PGA Junior Championship in the 13-15 division.

Both Park and Chu were members of the USA Hawai'i-Japan Cup all-star team earlier this month.

“Our golf team is very lucky to have two of the best players in Hawai'i commit early to play for the Warriors in 2009 on the last day of the signing period,” Miyashiro said. “They both had options to go to the mainland for school, but chose to stay home and not only represent the University of Hawai'i, but the people of Hawai'i as well. I look forward to having them join our team and helping us reach our goals of a WAC title and NCAA appearance.”

The Warrior golf team is loaded with talent from the 50th state. Current team members include T.J. Kua (Lihue, Kaua'i), Pono Calip (Hilo, Hawai'i), and Jared Sawada (Mililani, O'ahu).
