HONOLULU – Former University of Hawai'i men's basketball and track athlete Ed Gayagas was awarded with the 2008 Kane Fernandez Community Service Award at last Saturday's men's basketball game against San Jose State at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Gayagas is the eighth recipient of the award, presented annually to a past UH letterwinner who has volunteered his or her support unselfishly to further advance their community.
Gayagas lettered for UH from 1957-60. He is a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army, who serves on the Board of Directors for the Letterwinners Club, is president of the UH-ROTC Alumni Association, is a past Executive Director for the Na Koa Football Club, and was the founder and former coordinator for the UH track and field program. In addition, he also assists the UH Alumni Association with various events.
The award is named for the late Kane Fernandez, chairman and chief executive officer of Fernandez Entertainment, who passed away in January 2001. He was one of the original members of the UH Letterwinners Club.
