HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i softball team came back to defeat their Alumnae, 3-2 tonight in their annual Alumnae Game at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Kanani Pu'u-Warren hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the 'Bows over their predecessors. Relief pitcher,
Melissa Gonzalez, earned the win for the 'Bows, throwing the final two innings.
The game was scoreless through the first three innings, but it was the Alumnae who posted a pair of runs to take an early, 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Tyleen Tausaga drew a bases loaded walk with two outs to force
Kate Robinson home for the Alumnae's first run. Kristi Yoshizawa followed with an opposite-field, RBI single to left to drive in
Tanisha Milca.
Kate Robinson threw a complete game for the Alumnae, taking a shut-out through the first four and two-thirds innings, before giving up a two-out, RBI single to
Traci Yoshikawa, who hit a looping single into shallow left that allowed
Kelly Majam to score from second base. Majam had reached earlier on a double to the right-centerfield gap. After five complete innings the score was 2-1 in favor of the Alumnae.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Amanda Tauali'i started things off with a one-out walk. Pu`u-Warren then launched an opposite-field home run that sailed over the right-centerfield fence to overtake the lead, 3-2.
For UH,
Stephanie Ricketts threw the first five innings, giving up two unearned runs on five hits with three walks and three strike outs. After starting the game at third base, Gonzalez later re-entered the game to earn the win, holding a powerful Alumnae squad at bay. She walked two but fanned four in two-plus innings of work.
The Alumnae's Robinson threw the complete game, giving up three runs on six hits with six strike outs.
Both Majam and Pu`u-Warren led the 'Bows with two hits a piece. Majam went 2-for-2 with a run scored, a walk and a double, while Pu`u-Warren was 2-for-3 at the plate with the homer.
The Rainbow Wahine concluded their Fall schedule with the Alumnae Game. The 'Bows return to the diamond on Feb. 11-13, 2010 for the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic. This year's tournament features McNeese State, Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Stanford.
