HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine basketball head coach Dana Takahara-Dias announced the signing of a national letter of intent by Sydney Haydel, a prepster from Calabasas, Calif., Wednesday.
Haydel is a 5-9 guard from Harvard-Westlake High School in North Hollywood, Calif. She averaged 10.3 points and 7.9 rebounds per game last season as a junior, helping her team to a CIF Division 4A quarterfinal appearance.
“Sydney's versatility and athleticism is evident in the fact that she is a multi-sport athlete at Harvard-Westlake,” said Takahara-Dias. “She's a starting forward for her high school team. She also runs on the relay team, while competing in the hurdles and shot put on the track and field team. She is the second player on our team from the prestigious California Storm Team Taurasi summer team (which ranks fourth nationally), along with Shawna Kuehu. Her athleticism will provide an immediate impact that will help the program.”
The Rainbow Wahine won their season-opener yesterday, defeating UC Riverside 63-58 on the road. UH will play at UCLA tomorrow before finishing its road trip with a game at Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday.
