Warriors Ready For Spartans; Hold Final Tune-up At Spartan Stadium

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i football team held its final workout for tomorrow's Western Athletic Conference match-up against San Jose State, with a 60-minute practice Friday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

It was the first opportunity for the Warriors (4-6, 2-5 WAC) to practice on Spartan Stadium's new artificial field. It rained for much of today and the forecast for tomorrow's game calls for more rain with temperatures in the high 50s at kickoff.

Kickoff is 5:00 p.m. PT (3:00 p.m. HT) and the game will be televised live on Oceanic Pay-Per-View (Channel 255). In addition, fans can listen to the game live on ESPN 1420 AM, beginning with the “Countdown To Kickoff” show at 1:30 p.m. Neighbor islands can listen live on KNUI on Maui, KHLO in Hilo, KKON in Kona.

Hawai'i has won its last two games to improve its record to 4-6 overall, 2-5 in WAC play. Tomorrow's game is the WAC finale for the Warriors, who are coming off a 24-6 victory over New Mexico State.

The Spartans (1-8, 0-5) have lost five in a row, all against WAC opponents. SJSU head coach Dick Tomey recently announced his retirement following the season after a 40-plus year coaching career. Tomey coached at UH from 1977-86 and compiled a 63-46-3 overall record

SJSU leads the overall series with Hawai'i, 16-15-1. SJSU snapped a seven-game losing streak in the series with a 20-17 victory at Aloha Stadium last season. However, in games played in San Jose, Calif., UH has won four straight dating back to 1997. In their last meeting at Spartan Stadium in 2007, quarterback Colt Brennan directed an improbable come-from-behind overtime victory, which kept alive UH's undefeated regular season. Brennan helped the Warriors score two touchdowns in the final four minutes of regulation, then threw the game-winning pass to Jason Rivers in overtime for a 42-35 victory.

The Warriors return to Honolulu Sunday and will host Navy, Saturday, Nov. 28, at Aloha Stadium. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m.
