Soares’ Big Game Leads To WAC Weekly Award

DENVER – University of Hawai'i linebacker Blaze Soares was named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference defensive player of the week after his performance in the Warriors' win over Navy on Saturday.

Soares, a senior from Kane'ohe, O'ahu (Castle HS), tied his career-high with 12 tackles (11 solo) in Hawai'i's 24-17 win.  Soares helped hold Navy's rushing offense to 248 yards, well below its season average, and shut out the Midshipmen in the second half for the first time all season.  Soares' last tackle was a sack for a nine-yard loss on the game's final play.

The award is Soares' first of his career and marks the fifth Warrior to receive the league's weekly award this season joining quarterback Greg Alexander, slot receiver Greg Salas, running back Leon Wright-Jackson, and linebacker Corey Paredes.

Soares leads the team with 96 tackles, including 3.5 for loss and two sacks. He also had his first career interception several weeks ago against New Mexico State.

Utah State running back Robert Turbin and Boise State kick returner Titus Young received the offensive and special teams awards, respectively.

Soares and the Warriors will conclude the regular season this week by hosting Wisconsin, Saturday, Dec. 5 at Aloha Stadium. Soares is one of 23 seniors who will be honored following the game in the traditional “Senior Walk” ceremony.
