Greg Salas of the Warrior football team was one of the three finalists.
The 2nd Annual awards banquet was held on December 7 at the Kani Ka Pila Grille at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach Hotel in Waikiki. The award is given to an athlete (any sport) with a connection to the islands, who is outstanding athlete and role model both on and off the field.
The finalist/winner was determined by a panel of judges comprised of Island Sports Media staff, various coaches, and sponsors from Hawai'i, Oregon, Washington, and Texas. Based on the nominations received on athletes from Utah, Oregon, Hawai'i, and Washington the panel of judges voted on their top three choices. First place votes were given 5 points, second place 3 points, and third place was given 1 point. Once the top three choices were made, fans were given the opportunity to vote on their favorite athlete. The fan votes were ½ point each.
The winner of the 2009 Island Sports Media Athlete of the Year Youth Award was V.J. Fehoko of the Farrington High School Football (Hawai'i).
Jeremiah Masoli of the University of Oregon football team won the fan vote for Collegiate Athlete of the Year, however, when both the judges and fan votes were tallied Wichmann was declared the winner.
