Rainbow Wahine Wrap-Up 2008-09 Season

Notes

The University of Hawai'i women's golf team concluded their 2008-09 season one month ago with a seventh place finish in the Western Athletic Conference Championship in Reno, Nevada.

The Rainbow Wahine competed in nine tournaments this season, with their best team performances occurring at the tournaments which they hosted. At the Kent Youel Invitational played on the Kapolei Golf Course, UH carded its lowest 54-hole score of the season, a 916 (305-306-305). At the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational played on the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course, UH posted a 923 to earn its best finish of the season, sixth place.

Another stand-out team performance came at the Price's Give 'Em Five Invitational in October 2008. In this highly competitive tournament, the Rainbow Wahine placed ninth out of 17 teams. Top individual was freshman Kelcie Kawano (76-74-77=227) who tied for 15th at 11-over par.

Although the success of the season was a team effort, two team-members stood out, Corie Hou and Carolina Perez. Junior Corie Hou earned top individual in six of the nine tournaments in which the Rainbow Wahine competed. She shot the lowest 54-hole score (217) at the Heather Farr Memorial and earned the best finish (T4th) at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational. She also shot the lowest round of her collegiate career at the Kent Youel Invitational, a 69. Hou was ranked first on the team with an average of 75.92 strokes per round.

Carolina Perez made the most of her senior season by earning top individual in two tournaments, including a tie for 21st at the WAC Championship. Perez's shot her lowest 54-hole score (220) and earned her best finish (T8th) at the Fresno State Lexus Classic by carding rounds of 73, 73, and 74. She was also ranked second on the team with an average of 77.29 strokes per round, the lowest stroke average in any season of her four-year collegiate career. Perez leaves the Rainbow Wahine having competed in a total of 27 tournaments, with her career-low round of 70 and career-low finish of sixth place occurring at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in the 2006-07 season.

Also leaving the Rainbow Wahine is senior Phyllis Lai. Lai competed in eight of nine tournaments, the most in any season of her three-year collegiate career. She earned her best finish of the season at the WAC Championship, a tie for 29th, and shot the lowest 54-hole score of her career at the Price's Give 'Em Five Invitational, a 234 (78-77-79). In her three years on the team, Lai competed in a total of 15 tournaments, earning an average of 81.1 strokes per round. Her career-best finish came at the WAC Championship in the 2007-08 season where she tied for 18th place.
