HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i men's volleyball head coach
Charlie Wade announced today that
Mason Kuo will remain on staff as assistant coach. Wade was hired on May 22 and Kuo is the first addition to his staff.
Kuo finished his second season as a full-time head coach under Mike Wilton last season. Kuo was a volunteer coach the previous two seasons. The former UH setter will be entering his fifth season as part of the volleyball staff.
“Mason is a quality guy who is well respected. It was easy for me to recognize the positive contributions that Mason has made to the program's success,” Wade said. “I'm looking forward to working with him and having him contribute to our continual success.”
The Ewa Beach native, lettered for the Warriors from 1995-99. He led the team in assists his junior and senior seasons. He currently ranks sixth all-time on the school's career leader list for assists with 2,619. He was part of the Warriors' 1996 squad that was the NCAA national runner-up.
The 1994 graduate of McKinley High School lettered four years in volleyball. He was a two-time all-league selection and was also named OIA East Player-of-the-Year. He garnered honorable mention all-state honors and graduated Magna Cum Laude.
Kuo got started in the coaching ranks at his former ala mater McKinley. He coached the girl's junior varsity team and was a volunteer coach for the boy's varsity team. He then took over the reins at Mid-Pacific Institute and led the Owls for two seasons. In both seasons under Kuo, the Owls qualified for the Division II state championships.
