HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i men's volleyball head coach
Charlie Wade announced that Tony McInerny will join his coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach. McInerny, whose family has a long and rich volleyball history in the islands, joins associate coach Dan Fisher and assistant coach Mason Kuo on Wade's inaugural staff.
McInerny's coaching experience includes seven years at Punahou School, where he coached the intermediate boy's, junior varsity girl's, and varsity girl's teams from 1991-97. As the intermediate boy's coach, McInerny was the youngest head coach in Punahou School history. He also later coached the Kaimuki High School boy's varsity, University High School boy's varsity, and La Pietra School, where he headed the girl's volleyball program for six years.
In addition, McInerny is an active member of Outrigger Canoe Club, where he played on the men's open team for 10 years and coached boys 14s, 16s, and 18s teams.
A 1987 Punahou School graduate, McInerny attended San Diego State, where he was the starting setter for two years. He is currently a realtor with Case Properties International and assists at McInerny Transportation, Inc.
“Tony understands the game of volleyball, he's been around it nearly his entire life,” Wade said. “He's played it on the high school, collegiate, club, and professional levels, both indoor and outdoor, and coached girl's and boy's high school and club teams. He comes from a legendary volleyball family in the state of Hawai'i, which is well-respected in the volleyball community. So we're very fortunate and I'm extremely excited to have his talents and expertise on board.”
McInerny's sister, Diana, played for the UH women's volleyball team and was a member of the 1979 AIAW national championship team. His nephews, Riley and Maddison McKibbin, currently play for USC.
