UH Pair Claims Kailua Night Doubles Title

KAILUA, O`ahu — University of Hawaii men's tennis player Dennis Lajola and Rainbow Warrior volunteer coach Ikaika Jobe captured the Blue Moon Men's Night Doubles championship with a rousing three-set win over Mikael Maatta and Jan Axel Tribler Saturday night at the Kailua Racquet Club.

Lajola, a two-time all-conference player at UH, and Jobe, a Punahou School graduate and former Boise State standout outlasted their counterparts 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to claim the 39th edition of the tournament. It was the second Kailua Doubles title for Jobe who also won in 2004. Meanwhile, it was the first title for Lajola, who in the process earned the Sam Caldwell Amateur Award for top amateur performance.

The third-seeded team of Lajola and Jobe advanced to the finals after winning a trio of matches, including Friday night's semifinal win over top seed and three-time defending champions Minh Le and Wei Yu Su. Su who once was the No. 1 player for BYUH and Le a former Cal-Berkeley standout, were undefeated in nearly four years of the tournament before falling to Lajola and Jobe. Lajola and Jobe then defeated the No. 2 seeded pair of Maatta and Tribler, former All-Americans at Hawai`i Pacific.
