Men’s Basketball Drops Fourth Straight With Loss To Boise State

Box Score

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team suffered another excruciating loss, falling to Boise State 79-55 Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 9-7 overall and 0-4 in the Western Athletic Conference with their fourth straight loss.

For the second straight game UH was done in by a disasterous second half. The 'Bows held a two-point lead at the break, but the Broncos (11-5, 4-0 WAC) out-scored the Rainbow Warriors 50-24 after the break to win going away.

Zane Johnson led UH with 18 points while Vander Joaquim had 12 points and eight rebounds. La'Shard Anderson led three Broncos in double digits with 20 points, including five three pointers. Boise State nailed 9-of-17 three-pointers on the night.

UH got off to a slow start as Boise State went up 9-2 early on. But the 'Bows responded with 17-3 run to go up by seven points. UH eventually took a slim 31-29 lead into the locker room, holding the Broncos to just 32 percent shooting in the first frame.

But things fell apart for the Rainbow Warriors in the second half. The Broncos scored 12 straight points to start the second half, starting with back-to-back three-pointers, and took a double-digit lead, 41-31. The 12 unanswered spurred a 20-3 run that sealed the Bronco win. Boise State shot a sizzling 62 percent in the second half, while UH made just six field goals in the second half and shot 23 percent.

The loss gave UH its first 0-4 start in conference since the 1998-99 season. Its was also the seventh time in the last eight meetings that UH has lost to the Broncos.

UH now heads to the road for a pair of games, beginning with a matchup against New Mexico State on Thursday, Jan. 13. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. MT (4:00 p.m. HT).
