HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team opened the season with an exhibition game against Hawai'i Pacific University, defeating the Sea Warriors in a hard-fought contest, 62-56. The Rainbow Warriors used a second half rally to win their only exhibition game of the season.
Vander Joaquim had a stellar night, posting 12 points and game highs in rebounds (13) and blocks (6).
Zane Johnson led all scorers with 21 points on 5-12 from beyond the arc, and
Shaquille Stokes added 11 points in his UH debut.
Sean Jones led the Sea Warriors with 11 points on 4-11 shooting.
The 'Bows trailed 49-42 in the second half before clamping down defensively to grab the win. Johnson drained a three-pointer and knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the score at 52-52, and the 'Bows held HPU without a field goal for the final 6:15 of the game.
Hawai'i held an early 10-point first-half lead before HPU rallied to make a game of it. The 'Bows scored eight straight points, seven of them from Johnson, to take a 29-19 lead with 5:28 remaining in the first half. The Sea Warriors rallied to cut the lead 33-31 by halftime.
The Rainbow Warriors take the court for their regular season opener this Monday, Nov. 11, hosting Cal State Northridge. The game will be part of ESPN's College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon and will begin at 11:00 p.m.
