DENVER—The 2010-11 all-Western Athletic Conference teams have been named following a vote of the WAC's head coaches.
Kamilah Jackson and
Shawna-Lei Kuehu were both named to the WAC All-Freshman Team.
Jackson, a true freshman from Oakland, Calif., is currently fourth in the nation with a WAC-best average of 12.0 rebounds per game. Overall she averaged 11.9 points a game. In WAC games, she also averaged a double-double with 10.3 points and 12.0 rebounds per game. Jackson played in 15 conference games with 12 starts while shooting .398 (53-for-133) from the floor with 180 rebounds (78 offensive and 102 defensive). This past week, Jackson earned WAC Player of the Week honors as she recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 21 points and 19 rebounds in an overtime win over Utah State, 72-71 on March 3. She shot 50 percent from the field and 83 percent from the free throw line, hitting the game winning free throws with 0.3 seconds left in overtime for the win. She passed UH All-American Judy Mosely for the freshman single-season rebounding record and moved into fifth place in UH single-season rebounding history with 323 total rebounds.
Kuehu—a red-shirt freshman who missed most of last year due to a season-ending injury—got stronger as the year progressed and produced solid numbers across the board. The standout player from 'Aiea, O'ahu and Punahou School, finished the conference season tied for second on the squad with Jackson at 10.3 points per game. She had a total of 65 rebounds, 20 assists, 15 blocked shots, 24 steals and an .806 free-throw percentage (25-for-31) in 13 conference games. Overall, Kuehu averaged 9.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game with 63 assists and started the first 26 straight games this year before an injury held her out of the final three games of the year.
The two freshman are the first UH players to earn a spot on the elite rookie squad since Janevia Taylor earned the honor in 2003-04. Those three are the only three players to ever earn freshman team honors. Four players were named to the "All-Newcomer" team in the past. In 1996-97 Raylene Howard was selected and in 1997-98 Kylie Page earned a spot on the team. Both April Atuaia and Janka Gabrielova were selected as "All-Newcomers" in 2000-01.
