HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team defeated Wichita State Saturday, 12-3. The Rainbows posted a season-high 15 hits in winning three of four games in the series, and evening their record at 14-14. Wichita State falls to 18-11.
Kolten Wong had a monster game for UH, batting 4-5 with three runs and four RBI. Garrett Champion recorded two hits and two runs, and Jeff Van Doornum added two hits, one run, and one RBI.
Chris O'Brien led the Shockers at the plate. He batted 2-3 with one run, one RBI, including a double and a homerun.
The Shockers got on the board early with two first inning runs. Consecutive doubles by Kevin Hall (0-3, 1 R) and O'Brien gave WSU a 2-0 lead.
The 'Bows responded right away with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Wong and Zack Swasey (2 H, 1 RBI) collected RBI in the inning.
UH then took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. A pair of base hits by Wong and Van Doornum, and an error by shortstop Tyler Grimes (0-4) led to the big inning. UH added to its lead in the sixth inning when Pi'ikea Kitamura (1-3, 2 R, 3 RBI) delivered a two-RBI double to give UH a 7-2 advantage.
Jarrett Arakawa (2-2) tossed six innings for the win, recording a season-high eight strikeouts. Charlie Lowell (4-4) was tagged with the loss in five and one-third innings of work.
There were 2,693 tickets sold for the contest, and a turnstile count of 1,455.
The 'Bows open WAC play next week as they host Sacramento State. Game one is set for 6:35 p.m. on Friday, April 8.
