2011 Rainbow Wahine Outlook: Outside Hitters

Fall camp for the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team is in full swing as the team gears up for its season opener at the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational. HawaiiAthletics.com breaks down the 2011 team by position, here highlighting the outside hitters.

Starters Returning:
Kanani Danielson, Chanteal Satele
Starters Lost: None
Letterwinners Returning: Michelle Waber, Kaela Goodman
Newcomers: Jane Croson, Ginger Long

Outside hitter will be a major strength for Hawai'i this year, as the team returns two senior starters in Kanani Danielson and Chanteal Satele. Both were 2010 all-WAC selections with Danielson named to the AVCA all-America first team. They played every match for UH and recorded a combined 749 kills. Danielson and Satele were also selected to the 2011 WAC preseason all-conference team, with Danielson named Player of the Year.

Danielson, a three-time AVCA all-American, earned her second consecutive WAC Player of the Year honor last season. She ranked in the Top 10 nationally in kills (4.59 k/s) and became the 17th player in the program's history to eclipse 1,000 career kills. She was also named to the AVCA all-region team.

Satele was a solid contributor as a starter last season, and her experience and leadership should continue to be an asset for the team. She was second on the Rainbow Wahine in kills per set (2.81) and blocks per set (1.01), and delivered several fantastic performances last season, her first with UH after transferring from St. Mary's College.

Coming off the bench will be returnees Michelle Waber and Kaela Goodman. Waber played in every match last season and posted 178 kills en route to earning a spot on the WAC all-freshman team. She provided depth for the Rainbow Wahine and should continue to do so. Adding to the team's depth is Goodman who played in all but four matches last season. She notched 37 kills and will be in the mix for a spot on the right side.

Freshmen Jane Croson and Ginger Long are also expected to contribute this season. Both come in as former high school all-Americans.
