UH shot 52 percent from the floor and held a 43-31 advantage on the glass with freshman power forward Isaac Fotu leading the way with 15 rebounds. The 'Bows also defended the perimeter, holding the Hawks (0-1) to just 5-of-28 shooting from behind the arc.

Brereton set the tone early for UH by scoring the team's first 11 points, including three straight three-pointers to start the game. UH led by as many as 12 points in the first half before taking a 39-29 lead into the locker room.

UH didn't let up, building its lead to as many as 19 points in the second half. UMES did make a late surge cutting the deficit to eight points with less than two minutes left, but couldn't get any closer.

In the evening's first game, Houston Baptist defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 72-68.
