HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (1-3) fell to No. 1-ranked Baylor (4-1), 77-42 on the final day of the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic. Forward Kamilah Martin led UH with 15 points and eight rebounds on Sunday afternoon in front of 2,319 in attendance.
Martin was 7-for-11 from the floor with one offensive and seven defensive rebounds. She also had an assist and two steals in 34 minutes of action.
Destiny King scored seven points with six boards and team-high three assists.
The Rainbow Wahine actually out-rebounded the taller Lady Bears, 21-to-20 in the first half. But in the second half Baylor crashed the boards hard, ending with a 42-to-32 advantage. Baylor out-scored UH in the paint, 16-to-18 and 13-to-2 in second chance points. BU's depth also proved to be lethal, as they got 42 points from the bench—23 came from reserve guard Makenzie Robertson who sank 7-of-8 3-point shots and 8-of-9 overall for 23 points. But Hawai`i was able to outscore the Lady Bears 21-to-17 in points off of turnovers.
Baylor had four players score in double figures, led by Robertson. Destiny Williams poured in 11, while Jordan Madden and reigning National Player of the Year Brittney Griner both had 10 points apiece. Griner played just 16 minutes and also had four rebounds, an assists and a block.
The Rainbow Wahine continue their non-conference schedule next week when they host their second tournament, the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown, Nov. 23-25. Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Oregon will be spending Thanksgiving here in the Islands for the tournament.
