HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (2-4, 0-0 Big West) fell to Arkansas, 83-68. In the loss, Kamilah Martin scored her second straight 20-point game and was one rebound short of another double-double with nine.
Martin shot 7-for-13 from the floor and 6-of-9 from the free throw line for her 20 points. She also tied her season-high with four assists. Two other Rainbow Wahine recorded double-digits in points with freshman
Ashleigh Karaitiana notching a career-high 16 points while fellow freshman
Destiny King added 11—nine of which came in the second half. Karaitiana was also second on the team with six boards in the game. King played just nine minutes in the first half after being shackled with two early fouls. She was aggressive in driving to the hoop in the second half and as a result went to the free throw line eight times, making seven.
The first half was a see-saw battle with six lead changes and seven ties. But it was Arkansas who finished the half strong on an 8-to-2 run to go into the break with a 38-29 advantage. Martin led UH through the first 20 minutes with nine points and five rebounds.
The Razorbacks (4-1, 0-0 SEC) didn't allow the 'Bows to cut into their lead in the second half, always having a response to UH's offense. Hawai`i cut their deficit to just four points on a trey by
Monica DeAngelis at the 13:23 mark, but Arkansas would then go on a 15-to-4 run over the next five minutes to give themselves a 64-49 lead that they maintained the rest of the game.
Arkansas edged the 'Bows on the glass, 33-to-30 and had a 38-to-34 advantage in the paint. But the Razorbacks dominated in their bench scoring, 41-to-9. Hawai`i once again tied their season low with 14 turnovers.
The Rainbow Wahine conclude their second tournament tomorrow when they will battle No. 13 Oklahoma (3-1, 0-0 Big 12) at 2:30 pm. Oregon will face Arkansas in the opener at 12:00 pm.
