Inaugural Women’s Sand Volleyball Schedule Released

Complete Schedule

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i unveiled the schedule for its inaugural 2012 women's sand volleyball season. The Rainbow Wahine will play six regular-season events, including two home events in Waikiki.

“It's a very exciting time for Hawai'i volleyball as we are forging ahead as leaders of a new NCAA sport,” head coach Scott Wong said.  “Hawai'i has been synonymous with great beach volleyball players and now there will be a sand volleyball team that fans can get behind and support. The sand volleyball season will be relatively short this year but you won't want to miss the events because of the excitement, athleticism, and good volleyball all around.”

UH will open the season by hosting Hawai'i Pacific University and Nittaidai of Japan in a tournament on March 17th. The Rainbow Wahine will face HPU in another home match on April 7. Those matches—along  with UH practices—will be held at the Queen's Beach Sand Box in Waikiki,  home for UH sand volleyball before facilities are completed on the UH Manoa campus.

The rest of the schedule will take the Rainbow Wahine to Florida and California for four road contests. UH will play Jacksonville University on March 27 and travel to Tallahassee to face Florida State on March 29. The team will then return to Jacksonville for a tournament March 31-April 1, hosted by the University of North Florida.

On April 14-15, UH will compete in the Beach Collegiate Challenge at Hermosa Beach, Calif. Joining the Rainbow Wahine in the tournament will be Long Beach State, Pepperdine and USC.

There is also the possibility of post-season play for UH. As an emerging sport, the NCAA is not sponsoring a sand volleyball national championship in 2012. However the American Volleyball Coaches Association is sponsoring the 2012 Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championship, April 27-29, in Gulf Shores, Ala. The competition will consist of both a team championship, which will include the top four NCAA women's sand teams, and a pairs championship, which will consist of the top 16 collegiate doubles teams.  Invitations to participate will be based on 2012 season results and tournament selections will be made by a committee.

The 2012 UH sand volleyball team is comprised primarily of players from UH's nationally ranked indoor squad. Similar to college tennis doubles, sand volleyball competition will consist of five doubles teams competing in a flighted dual or tourney competition.  In dual meets, the winner will be the team winning three of the five matches.  In a tournament competition, individual winners can be named in each flight and the team champion is the one scoring the most points in all combined brackets.
