Azad Al-Barazi’s Olympic Run Comes To A Close

LONDON, England – Former University of Hawai'i swimmer Azad Al-Barazi competed Saturday in the men's 100m breastroke on Day 1 of the London 2012 Olympic Games at the Aquatics Center, but failed to advance out of the opening round. Al-Barazi was Syria's lone swimmer in the Olympics.

Al-Barazi swam in Heat 2, finishing seventh with a time of 1:03.48. Eight swimmers emerged from the four heats to qualify for the semifinals. The medal race takes place Sunday, July 29.

Al-Barazi prepped in California, but claimed dual citizenship with the U.S. and Syria because both of his parents were Syrian born. He competed two years (2008-09, 2009-10) for UH after transferring from Santa Monica College. The breaststroke and individual medley specialist prepped in the United States as well, and finished his collegiate career with a quality senior season. He broke three personal bests at the 2010 Conference USA Championships, finishing fifth in both the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke. He also landed seventh in the 200 IM.
