Women’s Soccer Clips Utah Valley In Overtime

Box Score

WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team captured the OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi tournament with a thrilling 2-1 overtime win Sunday night at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 3-1 with their third straight win.

Chelsea Miyake's penalty kick in the 103rd minute proved the game winner as UH improved their undefeated home streak to seven matches (6-0-1) dating back to last season.  Tournament MVP Tiana Fujimoto scored the other UH goal, marking the third straight match the sophomore has found the back of the net.  Fujimoto has now scored a team-high four goals on the season, including three in the last two matches. She is the first player in the last three years to score in three straight matches.

For the second straight match, UH dominated the action but needed a late goal to pull off the win. The Rainbow Whaine out-shot the Wolverines, 18-6, with eight of their shots coming on goal.

Both teams got on the board early and in rapid succession. Utah Valley drew first blood in the fourth minute when Lexi Robison gathered a ball just inside the penalty box and rocketed a shot in the upper left corner of the goal.

The lead didn't last long as UH answered just 16 seconds later on the ensuing kickoff. Krystal Pascua sent a long ball to a streaking Alexis Colacchio on the right flank. Colacchio then sent a cross into the middle of the box where Fujimoto put one home from close range to equalize.

That score stood all the way into regulation, though the Rainbow Wahine held a 18-4 shot advantage at the end of 90 minutes.  Despite that advantage, UH almost found themselves on the wrong side of the ledger after surviving a Wolverine shot off the post as the first overtime period came to a close.

However, UH's fortunes quickly changed in the second overtime period when Utah State committed a hand ball in the box. The Rainbow Wahine were subsequently awarded a penalty kick, which Miyake coolly put away. With their the third straight win, the Rainbow Wahine own their longest win streak since the 2009 season.

UH will takes its win streak into a pair of home matches next weekend, beginning with a meeting vs. Drexel on Friday, Aug. 31. Kickoff is at 5:00 p.m.
