HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team avenged a five-set loss one night earlier to No. 3 Stanford with a five-set thriller, Saturday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 20-25, 25-23, 21-25, 27-25, 15-11.
 
The Warriors (4-7, 3-5 MPSF) played their sixth five-set match in seven home contests this season. Overall it was UH's seventh five-setter in 11 matches and sports a 3-4 record in those contests.
 
UH was led by sophomore Brook Sedore, who tallied 17 kills, six digs, and three blocks. Freshman Sinisa Zarkovic added 11 kills and seven blocks while sophomore JP Marks posted nine kills and three aces. As a team, the Warriors hit just .187 but made up for it with nine aces and 18 total blocks.
 
For the second straight night, Steven Irvin led the Cardinal (7-3, 4-3) with a match-high 22 kills and 13 digs. Brian Cook added 16 kills.
 
Stanford got off to a fast start in Set 1, leading 7-3 and kept the advantage throughout the game en route to a 25-20 victory. The Warriors struggled offensively, hitting only .033 in the set with six service errors and no aces.
 
After serving up eight aces one night earlier, UH served up five to win Set 2. Stanford led for the better part of the set until the Warriors put together an 8-1 run to take a 22-20 lead. UH closed out the game on an 11-4 run to win 25-23.
 
The teams battled back-and-forth in Set 3 until the Cardinal scored four straight to take a 15-11 lead. Stanford managed to side-out with the Warriors the rest of the way for a 25-21 win.
 
In Set 4, the Warriors reeled off back-to-back points off of kills by Sedore for an 18-15 cushion. With Irvin at the service line, Stanford scored four straight points for a 24-23 lead. The Warriors fended off two match points with kills by Marks and closed out the set on a Stanford hitting error.
 
The Warriors jumped out to a 6-3 lead in Set 5 and extended it to 11-6 after a three-point spurt, including a kill by Marks and a pair of Cardinal hitting errors. A big block by Zarkovic and Holt gave UH match point at 14-10. After a Johann Timmer service error, Sedore ended it with his 17th kill.
 
The Warriors take the next week off before embarking on a weeklong road trip with a pair of MPSF series against UCLA (Feb. 15-16) and UC Irvine (Feb. 18-19).
