University of Hawai'i freshman outside hitter Sinisa “Siki” Zarkovic was selected as the Sports Imports/AVCA Men's Division I-II National Player of the Week, one day after earning his second Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Molten Player of the Week.
Zarkovic (Belgrade, Serbia/Sports Grammar School) accumulated a two-match hitting clip of .429 (28-4-56) in the Warriors' five-set wins over USC last weekend. In the first match, he served four of the team's 12 aces, which was an MPSF team-high for a conference match this year. Two of the four aces were in set five, helping UH come back for a 3-2 win after a two-set deficit. That same night, he collected his third double-double of the season on 16 kills and 10 digs, while hitting .452.
This is the 17th time an athlete from Hawai'i has taken home Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week honors, with the most recent coming from Jonas Umlauft after he won it on March 12th of 2011. In addition, he is a repeat winner of the MPSF award in 2013, also earning it on Jan. 28 after leading UH to a sweep of Pepperdine.
On the season, the freshman leads the team with a 2.93 kill average and ranks second in digs (1.40) and third in aces (16).
The Warriors will play a two-match MPSF series at Cal Baptist this weekend in Riverside, Calif.
