Women’s Water Polo Upends UC Santa Barbara, 10-7

Box Score

HONOLULU – The No. 8 University of Hawai'i women's water polo remained undefeated in league play with a 10-7 win over No. 17 UC Santa Barbara Thursday night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 12-7 overall and 3-0 in the Big West with their sixth win in their last eight matches.

Monika Eggens powered UH with six goals—five of which came in the first half. The senior, who was limited to just one goal in UH's last match versus top-ranked USC, was an absolute force for the Rainbow Wahine, registering her 12th hat trick of the season.

The Rainbow Wahine got off to a sluggish start as the visiting Gauchos (16-9, 1-2 Big West) jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 100 seconds into the match. UH, however, came back with three straight goals—including a pair by Eggens—to take a 3-2 lead after the first quarter.

The Gauchos tied the score, 3-3, at the 5:51 mark of the second quarter. But that's when the Rainbow Wahine put it into another gear. Eggens sparked a string of seven unanswered goals by UH. A trio of Eggens goals in the second quarter gave the Rainbow Wahine a 6-3 lead at the break and UH piled on four more in the third quarter to take a commanding 10-3 lead into the final quarter.

The Gauchos out-scored UH 4-0 in the fourth quarter, but it was too-little, too-late. UH got nine saves from Amy Carlson, while Ruth Milne had six for UCSB.

The Rainbow Wahine return to the pool tomorrow with a huge Big West matchup with No. 6 San Diego State at 6:00 pm.
