Men’s Basketball Signs JC Guard

HONOLULU – University of Hawai`i men's basketball coach Gib Arnold announced the signing of another talented guard in the spring signing period. Garrett Nevels of Mount San Antonio College signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the team for the 2013-14 season.

Nevels, a 6-2 guard, will have two years of eligibility with the Rainbow Warriors. The native of Los Angeles helped lead Mt. SAC to its first state junior college men's hoops title this past spring. He scored 32 points in the championship game against Chaffey College and was the CCCAA State Tournament MVP.

For the season, Nevels averaged 19.8 points per game as a sophomore at Mount SAC and also led the team in rebounding (5.6 rpg) and three-pointers made (49). He shot 57.8 percent shooting from the field, 81.4 percent from the free-throw line and 47.6 percent on three-pointers. Nevels, who was a first-team all-city player at Palisades Charter High School, also led the team with a 3.58 GPA.

“What I like best about Garrett is that he's a winner,” Arnold said. “His team won the California junior college championship and he was MVP of the tournament. He's an athletic guard who can shoot and defend. I believe he was the best JC guard in California. We went after him hard and I'm glad he's a Warrior.”

The Rainbow Warriors already received a commitment from Missouri transfer Webster-Chan, a multi-skilled 6-7 guard, on the first day of the spring signing period. This year's recruiting class also includes early signees Stefan Jovanovic and Michael Thomas, a pair of California prepsters.
