One day after earning Big West Defensive Player of the Week honors, University of Hawai'i women's soccer goalkeeper Monk Berger was named National Freshman of the Week by CollegeSoccer360.com.
Â
Berger was instrumental in UH's historic road sweep at Oregon and Oregon State, posting a pair of shutouts against Pac-12 foes. The native of Garden Grove, Calif., stopped all 11 shots she faced during the two games, while dealing with a barrage of action in front of her throughout the weekend (30 total opponent shots, 11 corner kicks).
Â
In her second start of her college career she made seven saves at Oregon, including two of them in 1-on-1 situations. Berger followed that up with four saves at Oregon State, including two from point-blank range, as UH played the final 14 minutes with just 10 players. Her steady play helped UH halt its futility on the road (2-20-1 prior) and against Pac-12 squads (3-25 prior).
Berger and her teammates will host Idaho State (Sept. 13, 7:00 p.m.) and Portland State (Sept. 15, 5:00 p.m.) in the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic this weekend.
