Big West Meet Information |
Live ResultsHONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's cross country team travels to Riverside, Calif. later this week, competing at 8:30 a.m. PT on Saturday, Oct. 31st at the Big West Cross Country Championships. The 6k conference championship race will be held at the Agricultural Operations Course located near the UC Riverside campus.
This meet marks the squad's fourth mainland meet, second in California and third at the 6k distance. Most recently, the Rainbow Wahine competed at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational on Oct. 17, with all eight runners posting 6k career bests, paced by sophomore
Montana Martinez, who dropped 48.13 second off her career best to run the fastest UH time since 2007 and second-fastest since 2001.
"I am super excited to see our team compete at this year's Big West Cross Country Championship," UH head track and field and cross country coach
Carmyn James said. "Coach
Tim Boyce has done an excellent job preparing the runners all season and the results from this weekend's race will be a reflection of how much our program has improved in just one season—even with the majority of our team members being just freshmen!"
UH sports a very young team that has seen great success this season—running for the Rainbow Wahine this weekend are freshman
Haley Beaumont, freshman
Camille Campos, junior
Alli Cross, junior
Caitlyn Foss, sophomore Martinez, freshman
Tristan Setzer, freshman
Sabrina Sterbis and senior
Jade Vaughan.
Martinez, Campos and Cross each have paced the squad in the team's top off-island races this season, with each winning Big West Athlete of the Week honors. The trio are consistently among the top three scorers for the Rainbow Wahine.
Coming off an extremely fast course at Santa Clara, the Ag Ops Course is a fast, dirt-based course with little grass and few elevation changes.
Last season, Hawai'i placed ninth for the second consecutive year, led by Martinez, who placed 41st overall, completing the 6k race in 22:35.8. The then-rookie completed her sweep of leading UH in each competition on the year. Also returning from last year's Big West,
Caitlyn Foss came in 63rd in 24:09.6 a year ago.
Outside of the Martinez and Foss, the six remaining runners will be competing in their first championship event.
