Men’s Volleyball Finalizes 2016 Schedule

2016 Schedule  |  2016 Roster

HONOLULU – The 2016 University of Hawai'i men's volleyball schedule is complete and the Rainbow Warriors will host 17 matches beginning with the 22nd annual Outrigger Resorts Invitational.

The Outrigger runs January 7-8, and 10 at the Stan Sheriff Center and features national runner-up Lewis of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, Harvard of the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and King (Ten.) University of Conference Carolinas. It will mark the first meeting for UH against either Harvard or King.

The Rainbow Warriors will also host two non-conference matches against Grand Canyon of the MIVA (Jan. 21-22) in addition to their 22-match Mountain Pacific Sports Federation slate, which includes two-match home series versus UC San Diego (Jan. 29 & 31), UCLA (Feb. 5-6), Long Beach State (Feb. 24 & 26), Brigham Young (March 2 & 4), UC Irvine (March 25-26), and California Baptist (April 8-9). UCI is the defending league champions while BYU, Long Beach State and UCLA also advanced to the MPSF Tournament.

UH will travel for road series with Pepperdine (Jan. 15-16), Stanford (Feb. 12-13), USC (Feb. 15-16), CSUN (March 11-12), and UC Santa Barbara (April 1-2). Pepperdine and USC finished third and fourth, respectively, in the final league standings.

The MPSF Tournament begins with the quarterfinal round, April 16, and the semifinals and finals, April 21 & 23. The NCAA Championships will be hosted by Penn State in University Park, Pa., May 3, 5 and 7.

Hawai'i returns nine players from last season's squad, which advanced to the NCAA Championship tournament for the first time since 2002 and ascended to the No. 1 national ranking during the season. UH finished runner-up in the highly-competitive MPSF with an 18-4 mark and posted 24 overall wins, its most since the 2003 campaign.

Among the returnees include AVCA honorable mention outside hitter Sinisa Zarkovic and returning starters setter Jennings Franciskovic, outside hitter Kupono Fey, and libero Kolby Kanetake. Franciskovic and Fey are coming off an appearance with the U.S. Junior National Team this summer competing at both the Pan American Cup in Gatineau, Canada and FIVB U21 World Championships in Mexico.

The team also welcomes former All-American Joshua Walker, who joins the coaching staff as assistant coach.

The Rainbow Warriors open fall camp next week.
