HONOLULU—University of Hawai'i head softball coach
Bob Coolen announced the signing of five recruits for the 2017 season. Callee Heen, Chardonnay Pantastico, Angelique Ramos, Bree Soma, and Briana Wheeler all signed their National Letters of Intent to become members of the Class of 2020 for the Rainbow Wahine.
Heen is a 5-9 shortstop/catcher from San Benito High School in Hollister, Calif. This past season at SBHS, she hit .634 as she help lead the Haybaylers to a 24-5 record. In 2014, she was voted the Monterey Bay League's Division Most Valuable Player. She was also named Prep2Prep's Player of the year and was votedto Cal-Hi Sports' all-state second team for underclassmen. Last season as a junior, Heen earned first team all-league honors as SBHS won their second division championship in three season.
"Callee is a versatile player that can play behind the plate, at third base, shortstop or in centerfield," says Coolen. "She is a lefty, power-hitter who has a very strong arm. She plays with a quiet confidence about her and has a presence on the field."
Chardonnay is a stand-out shortstop who helped lead Campbell High School (Ewa Beach, O'ahu) to the 2015 state championship. Pantastico is a 5-6 switch hitter who earned first team all-league and all-state honors last season as a junior. She hit .333 and was 4-for-4 in stolen bases for the Sabers and led them to a 16-4 overall record. She can also play second base and in the outfield as well.
"Chardonnay is a solid player out of Campbell," states Coolen. "She stood out playing shortstop and is a vocal leader who makes those around her better. We were impressed with her on-base percentage and her ability to get on base in all sorts of ways. She is a confidence booster for everyone around her."
Ramos is a 5-5 third baseman out of Millikan High School in Long Beach, Calif. Ramos has played on the varsity squad since her freshman season and will be a captain this season. Last year, she hit .402 with five doubles, four triples and 10 home runs to tally a .926 slugging percentage. She also scored a team-high 39 runs and drove in a team-best 36 runs while helping to lead the Rams to a 21-9 record. She was named to the Press Telegram's 2015 Softball Dream Team (along with current Rainbow Wahine freshman, Jennifer Iseri). She also made all-league and all-CIF first team while being voted Most Valuable Player.
"Angelique is a power hitter who hits the ball hard and has a good arm," says Coolen. "She plays shortstop for her high school team but plays third base for her club team. She has a high softball IQ and she hits the ball well to all fields which makes her a good player for us."
Soma is a three-year varsity starter at Maryknoll School in Honolulu, O'ahu. The 5-3 outfileder hit .387 as a junior with a .992 fielding percentage. Soma, a southpaw from 'Aiea, O'ahu, was named all-league in 2013, '14, and '15 and all-state in both 2014 and '15. Last season, she helped lead the Spartans to a 16-4-1 record.
"Bree stood out for me this past summer when she was playing with her club team," says Coolen. "She had an incredible tournament both offensively and defensively. At 5-3, people may underestimate her, but she is a solid spray hitter who can definitely hit for power. She hit balls over the fence, to the fence and to all fields with sound hitting mechanics. In the outfield, she has good instincts and is able to track balls down. I think she'll be able to come in and do a good job in the outfield for us."
Wheeler is a 5-7, right-handed pitcher out of from Fontana, Calif. Last year as a junior at Etiwanda High School (Etiwanda, Calif.) she posted an 18-4 record with 201 strike outs and an ERA of 1.37 in 153 innings pitched. She was a first team all-league selections and was named the Redlands Tournament Most Valuable Player.
"Briana is a power-pitcher. She has really come into her own getting quicker every year since her freshman season in high school and she has an arsenal of pitches she uses." says Coolen. "She pitches for a marquee club team and has gotten stronger over the years and she will be a strong addition to our pitching staff."
