Meet Information/Course Map
HONOLULU –The University of Hawai'i women's cross country team will conclude the 2016 regular season this weekend on the mainland, with the Bronco Invitational at Baylands Regional Park in Sunnyvale, Calif. on Saturday (Oct. 15). The meet is hosted by Santa Clara University and UH is competing in the meet for the 11th consecutive season.
The Rainbow Wahine are traveling a nine-runner squad, which will depart from the islands on Thursday en route to the initial stop in San José. The team will travel to Baylands on Friday in preparation for Saturday's 6k race.
The women's 6k race will begin at 6:45 a.m. HT (9:45 a.m. PT) on Saturday, following the men's 8k, which will open the meet day. Baylands Park is located in Sunnyvale, Calif., just under 10 miles away from Santa Clara's campus. The course provides a fast and flat running path, consisting of low-cut grass and hard-packed dirt paths with a few short paved sections. Runners will make two full passes at the multi-loop course.
Last year's race field consisted of 172 runners from 21 different teams. The Rainbow Wahine finished 13th, topped by then-sophomore
Montana Martinez, who clocked the fastest UH time of the season in the 6k at 21:26.7 – in fact, it was the fastest UH time since 2007.
Martinez has consistently scored high for the Rainbow Wahine this season, but the phenomenal season of sophomore
Camille Campos has stolen the headlines. The Bakersfield, Calif. native simply outdid herself, and some historic UH names, in her last outing at the Capital Cross Challenge. She ran a 6k mark of 20:44.4, earning second place and Big West Athlete of the Week, while producing the fastest 6k time in program history. She has four wins in four races and has produced a PR each time. She ran a time of 22:00.60 in the race last year.
Both Wahine will need to battle it out with senior
Alli Cross, who has pushed her times all year, and recorded a mark of 22:00.90 in this race a year ago. Not to mention, the efforts of freshman
Maddie Fuhrman and sophomore
Tristan Setzer. Fuhrman has scored in each race this year and has a top 6k time of 22:42.4, while Setzer has also been a weekly scorer, topping out so far with a 22:38.7.
The Bronco Invitational is the final competition of the regular season, in advance of the Big West Championships, held Oct. 29th at the north shore's Kahuku Golf Course – with UH as host program. This is the third 6k race for the Rainbow Wahine this season and seventh race for the team overall.
