HONOLULU – After an impressive rise in the Big West standings, the University of Hawai'i cross country team returns to action at the NCAA West Regional for the second consecutive season on Friday, Nov. 11. Competing on a course where the Rainbow Wahine saw great success, the post-season meet will be held at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento, Calif. – site of the Capital Cross Challenge earlier this season.
Hosted by the Sacramento State University and the Sacramento Sports Commission, the women's 6k race begins at 9:00 a.m. HT (11:00 a.m. PT), with 39 teams represented in the meet. Much like at the Capital Cross Challenge, the race path will run alongside and down the fairways of the golf course, with multiple large curves on the two-lap course. The terrain is very flat and almost all of the running will be on well-maintained fairways.
The Rainbow Wahine will travel a seven-athlete squad to the NCAA Regional.
At the end of the day, the top two teams from the regional qualify to join the field of 18 automatic berths to the NCAA Championships, held Nov. 19 in Terre Haute, Ind. In addition, 13 further teams from the nine regions will be selected as at-large teams.
Aside from team qualifiers, 38 individual entrants will be selected to compete at the national meet, including the top four Regional individuals not on qualifying teams, if they finish in the top 25. An NCAA subcommittee will determine the at-large bids for the 13 teams and two individuals on Saturday.
The Rainbow Wahine will be making only their second full-squad appearance at the West Regional since 2010 and return in back-to-back years. Last season, then-junior
Alli Cross paced the UH squad with a 175th-place finish in 23:17.4 at the Seattle, Wash. meet.
Montana Martinez followed in 182nd (23:25.2),
Haley Beaumont was 193rd (23:36.2),
Sabrina Sterbis was 209th (23:53.9) and
Caitlyn Foss rounded out the scoring group at 210th (23:54.6).
From last year's Regional squad, six Rainbow Wahine return this season and all members for UH ran the course earlier this season. In the Oct. 1 race, sophomore
Camille Campos finished second overall and set a then-program-record 6k mark at 20:44.4. Now a junior, Martinez trailed by only a small margin in 20th at 21:19.0. One of two seniors this season, Cross finished in 22:09.6 and ran her best 5k time of the season on this course last year. Sophomore
Tristan Setzer ran a time of 22:38.7 and rookie
Maddie Fuhrman was the fifth UH scorer at 22:42.4. Now a sophomore, Beaumont ran a 23:08.6 and the 'Bows' other senior, Foss ran a time of 23:23.8 on the course earlier this season.
Foss and Cross will be competing in their final collegiate Regional and will make their final bid for a trip to the NCAA Championships on Friday.
