SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i baseball team won their final game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy 8-4 against Fresno State Sunday morning.
The Rainbow Warriors (3-4) grabbed their first road win of the year thanks to their best collective hitting performance of the year. The Bulldogs (3-4) lost all three of their games this weekend.
Fresno State got on the board first as they put one across in the bottom of the first.
The 'Bows responded in the second inning big time when junior designated hitter
Dallas Duarte hit a tank to left field, tying the game. Junior right fielder
Matt Wong finished the four-run inning with a single through the left side.
The Bulldogs would get one back in the bottom of the second, making it a 4-2 ballgame.
The Warriors kept the momentum going in the third, with Duarte doubling to right field, scoring two more. Freshman shortstop
Jordan Donahue laid down the suicide squeeze putting them up 7-3.
After Fresno State took one back in the bottom of the third, all went quiet until the seventh, where they scratched one more run across.
Wong picked up his second RBI to add some insurance in the top of the eighth.
The Bulldogs threatened in the ninth by loading the bases, pitcher
Tai Atkins came on in relief with one out and shut them down.
Sophomore pitcher
Connor Harrison picked up his first win in his 1 2/3 innings pitched. He had two hits, one strikeout, and one earned run in his outing.
Duarte led the 'Bows with two hits, three RBIs, and one double. Junior first baseman
Jacob Igawa and Wong had a pair of hits each in the contest, while Wong had two RBIs.
The Warriors will stick around in California for an extra day to play San Diego State for a one-game competition starting at 4:00 pm HT.
