PETERSBURG, Fla. – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine sailing team kept themselves firmly in the hunt following the opening day of racing at the 2026 ICSA Women's Fleet Race National Championship, concluding in 12th place in the Western National Semifinal round.

Hosted by the University of South Florida on the waters of Tampa Bay, the prestigious event features the nation's top 36 women's programs split evenly into 18-team Eastern and Western semifinal fleets. UH, which qualified through an at-large bid from the National Championship Selection Committee on April 28, found itself in the Western semifinals. The fleets completed a total of 12 races, six races across both the A and B divisions, on day one. Brown University leads the pack at the midway point.

The Rainbow Wahine now face a manageable task in making the nine-team cut to advance to the finals. UH has 116 total points, just 10 points out from the current occupier of ninth place in Northeastern which has 106 points.

Sailing for the Rainbows' A division squad, which finished with 73 points after one day of sailing, placing 13th place in its division. All-conference skipper Martha Schuessler completed all six races with All-conference crew Amanda Turner. The B team, meanwhile, tallied 43 points, good for 8th in its division, anchoring the team's performance and keeping the Rainbows within striking distance. All-conference skipper Stella Taherian raced alongside Elin Reigstad, placing in the top four in three of their six races. Kahlia Bailey and Ann Tokoyoda made the trip as alternates.

More semifinal races are expected to be completed tomorrow, weather permitting, to finalize the field. UH is seeking its first advancement to the finals round since the 2012 season. Fans can follow Saturday's action through the ICSA Scoring website.

The Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) selected Amanda Turner, Arden Rathkopf, Erik Anderson, Kahlia Bailey, Kylie Alexander, and Peyton Lieser to its 2025-26 All-Academic Sailing Team.

The ICSA All-Academic Sailing Team recognized 255 juniors and seniors from across the nation who participated as a competitor or alternate in at least seven regattas during the season, and had a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

The All-PCCSC skipper-crew pair of Anderson and Turner earned academic honors in consecutive years. The respective mechanical engineering and biology majors are set to graduate this spring semester. The A division mainstay duo sailed nearly every race together for the coed team and found great success within the division. Turner will be joining the women's team for the ICSA National Championship coming up this weekend, May 15-18, in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Rathkopf, Bailey, Alexander, and Lieser all received recognition for the first time.

Rathkopf, a marine biology major, holds the distinction of being the only junior from UH on this year's list. Appearing in exactly seven regattas, his season was highlighted by a contribution in the 'Bows' fourth-place finish at the L.A. Harbor Cup.

Bailey, Alexander, and Lieser are all expected to graduate this spring, concluding their collegiate careers with the academic distinction. Bailey sailed a majority of her races as a skipper with Alexander at crew. The business major and anthropology and psychology double major, respectively, notably placed second in the A division as a pair at the Jeff Simon Women's Regatta in January. Lieser, a sustainability major, appeared in 13 regattas as a crew.

UH will compete on the waters off the coast of St. Petersburg, Fla. for the second time this season. It will enter the competition ranked 27th.

The field of 36 schools from across the nation will be split into two even groups of 18. The semifinals will take place over the first two days of competition, with the top-nine schools of each group moving on to the final round. The 18-team finals, which will take place over the last two days of competition, will determine the winner and title holder of Women's Fleet Race National Champion.

The Rainbow Wahine qualified for nationals after receiving an at-large bid on April 28 from the National Championship Selection Committee. The bid comes after the 'Bows finished third at the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference (PCCSC) Women's Fleet Race Championship, just outside of the top-two school automatic qualifying threshold.

UH's selection marks the fifth consecutive year that the Rainbow Wahine have qualified for the national championship tournament, and 23rd overall in program history.

Representing UH in Florida will be All-Conference selections Martha Schuessler, Stella Taherian, and Amanda Turner, joined by Elin Reigstad, Kahlia Bailey, and Ann Tokoyoda. After nearly advancing following an 11th place result in last year's fleet race national championship semifinal round, Hawai'i will continue to eye a finals round appearance for the first time since the 2012 season.

Just over two months ago, the 'Bows made the trip to Florida to compete in the South Florida Team Race, putting forth a strong effort towards a runner-up finish. Using its familiarity with these waters, sailing in two team race regattas over the last two seasons, the wahine will look to turn its previous success into a strong postseason performance.

Over the nearly three decades of women's sailing at the University of Hawai'i, the Rainbow Wahine sailors have displayed incredible consistency, missing nationals just five times, excluding the cancellation of the 2020 event due to COVID-19. The Rainbow Wahine captured their only national championship 25 years ago in the 2001 season.

UH will enter as the 27th ranked school, after a third-place finish at the PCCSC Fleet Race Championship in mid-April.

The field of 36 teams from across the country will be divided into two semi-finals groups. The semifinals of the regatta will be held over the first two days, with the top nine schools of each division moving on to the finals round. The Rainbow Sailors were represented across the open skipper, women's skipper, and crew categories.

Senior Erik Anderson earned an open skipper nod, while his long-time sailing partner, senior Amanda Turner, received a selection as a crew. The duo has been a mainstay in the A Division for UH throughout their careers.

On the women's side, juniors Stella Taherian and Martha Schuessler garnered women's skipper selections. It marks the first career All-Conference honors for both Rainbow Wahine, with Taherian making a successful transition from crew to skipper this season. Their leadership at the helm helped propel the women's team to a second-place team race and third-place fleet race conference finish.

Both Anderson and Turner secured honors in their respective categories for the third consecutive season, marking a historic milestone for the program. Anderson is the first All-PCCSC skipper to achieve three selections since three-time All-American Bryan Lake in 2004, while Turner becomes the first All-PCCSC crew member to earn a third nod since two-time All-American Jennifer Warnock in 2003.

The regatta was held March 28-29 at UH's home site in Ke'ehi Lagoon.

The Rainbow Sailors displayed their depth to shut out a visiting field that included teams from Arizona State, UC San Diego, and UNC Wilmington. 16 racing sets were completed throughout the weekend, with A and B divisions racing for each team.

The eight-team field was met with harsh winds on the first day that set the stage for aggressive, yet volatile racing. Many boats capsized, but 10 sets were able to be completed. Fortunately, conditions lightened up on Sunday and the last six races took place. The sun shone bright throughout the weekend.

Leading the charge was the Rainbow Green team, which claimed the overall crown with a regatta-low 148 points. The all-underclassmen squad trounced the competition, placing in the top three in 13 of their 20 races, winning two. William Bagley and Leila Landay represented the A division, while Christopher Daher skippered for Seaena Charlton and Lily Beckerman in the B division.

The Rainbows team secured the runner-up spot with 180 points, powered by an unmatched performance in the A division. The duo of Erik Anderson and Amanda Turner put on a masterclass, sweeping their first 11, and placing in the top three through 14 races. Spencer Fleming skippered for Jenna Englehart and TePua Ho in the B division, which placed second in a race.

The Rainbow Black team rounded out the podium in third place with 236 points. The squad was anchored by a steady A division performance from Everett McAvoy and Alister Muto, who placed in the top-five in 11 of their 16 races. Sam Bartlett and Olivia Merz sailed in the B division.

The Rainbow Wahine took fourth place with 243 points. The all-wahine lineup featured three different skippers in the A division, with Martha Schuessler and Stella Taherian skippering for Avery Hogue, and Elin Reigstad who split time between both positions. Elizabeth Fourney and Kahlia Bailey skippered for Peyton Lieser and Kylie Alexander in the B division.

Completing the top-five sweep was the Rainbow White team with 270 points. The team featured Arden Rathkopf and Ann Tokoyoda in the A division, and Zach Brennan and Erin Wilmore in the B division.

The weekend sweep will provide a massive boost of momentum for the 'Bows as they enter the championship season. The Rainbow Wahine will look to break through when they travel to Lake Whatcom, Wash., for the PCCSC Women's Fleet Race Championship on April 11-12.
